Year 6
In Year 6 this term we will be covering the following:-
Literacy:
This term the children will be:
- revising work covered over the last two years
a reading and writing fiction
b reading and writing non fiction
c poetry
- studying explanations linked to work from other subjects
- looking at non chronological reports linked to work from other subjects
- using reference texts, a range of dictionaries, thesauruses, including IT sources
Numeracy:
Children will be taught to:
- multiply and divide decimals by 10 and 100 using short and long methods
- simplify fractions and understand the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages
- solve simple problems involving ratio and proportion
- use a protractor to measure acute and obtuse angles to the nearest degree, and to read and plot coordinates
- solve word problems and explain the method of working out and the reasoning behind the working out
- solve problems by extracting and interpreting information presented in tables, graphs and charts
As with other years the following subjects are organised into a two-year cycle to ensure that children in mixed age classes do not cover topics twice. All work is planned so that children are taught at the appropriate level.
Science:
More about dissolving:
This topic will extend children?s understanding of what happens when a variety of solids dissolve. It will include:
· making and testing predictions
· planning a fail test
· repeating observations and measurements
· representing data in line graphs and interpreting what they show
Reversible and Irreversible Changes:
- This topic will extend their understanding of reversible changes and introduce irreversible change that produce new materials.
ICT:
Year 6
Control and Monitoring ' What happens when'
children will learn how to input devices or switches to control a process
Year 5
Spreadsheet Modelling:
- children will learn to use spreadsheets to explore a mathematical model
In addition teachers aim to incorporate the use of ICT into all their other subject planning where possible.
History:
Who were the ancient Greeks-
- children will find out about the way people lived in the ancient Greek empire.
RE:
Writings:
- during this topic children will consider holy books from different religions, their meanings and their value
Geography:
What's in the News:
- children will use news items to develop their geographical skills and ideas
PE:
Athletics:
- to be led by specialist teachers throughout the term. Children focus on developing their technical understanding of athletic activity.
Striking and fielding games:
· children have to think about different roles in a variety of activities
Art:
People in action:
- children explore how to convey movement in their work. They explore dynamic activities such as sport, drama, dance and music as a starting point for making work in two dimensions.
Design and Technology:
Moving Toys (control mechanisms):
- children will learn about controlling movement with a cam mechanism as part of a simple toy. They will design and make a toy with a moving part, using a cam for a particular purpose.
Music:
Stars hide your fires:
- children will develop and demonstrate their ability to take part in class performance with control, confidence and expression.
Modern Foreign Languages:
French is being taught to Years 3 and 4 and German to Year 6.
