Year 5

 

In Year 5 this term we will be covering the following:-

 

Year 5

 

Literacy

  • Autobiographies and Biographies
  • Playscripts
  • Various forms of poetry
  • Classic fiction novels
  • Non fiction writing including instructions

 

Numeracy

The children will cover the following areas:

·         Multiplication and division by 10 and 100

·         Order positive and negative numbers

·         Use division to find simple fractions

·         Know the value of a number with two decimal places

·         Learn times table up to 10 x 10

·         Solve simple word problems involving ?real life? situations

·         Understand area and perimeter

·         Develop their calculator skills

Years 5 and 6

 

Science

Life cycles

·         Children will learn that plants and animals need to reproduce as part of their life cycle.  They will begin to understand how this is important for the survival of the species

·         Children will learn about different aspects of keeping healthy and will learn about the heart and how it is effected by exercise

Year 6

Changing circuits

·         Children will explore understanding of circuits, constructing them using symbols and investigating ideas to answer questions

Reversible and irreversible changes

·         This unit brings together and consolidates work that children have done before on reversible and irreversible changes

 

History

What can we learn from recent history from studying the life of a famous person?

·         Children will study and reflect on the life of Princess Diana

 

RE

Barriers and bridges

·         Children will explore how religious belief effect approaches to moral issues

 

Geography

A contrasting locality: Bristol

·         Children will study locality in the UK that contrasts with their own area

 

Art

Visiting a museum

·         Children will visit and learn about Bristol Museum ? work back at school will be based on information and experience acquired

 

 

Design and Technology

Shelters

·         Children will investigate several shelters and investigate reinforcing and strengthening techniques.  They will design and make a shelter for a specific purpose.

 

 

 

 

ICT

Year 5

Graphical Modelling

·         Children will use a graphics package to produce images and models

Analysing data and asking questions

·         Children will investigate information from the internet and present data in graphical form

Year 6

Multimedia Presentation

·         Children will learn how to create a multi-media presentation using text, images and sounds.  They will learn how to design a set of multimedia pages and create the links between them.

 

Music

Cyclic patterns

·         Exploring rhythm and pulse through African music

Roundabout

·         Exploring, practicing and performing a range of rounds

 

PE

Invasions Games (years 5 and 6)

·         Children will develop skills of passing, dribbling, and shooting, awareness of space, and tactics of attacking and defending in a variety of exercises and games

Gymnastics (year 5)

·         Children will develop complex sequences choosing actions, body shapes and balances from a wider range of themes and ideas

Swimming (year 6)

·         All children in Key Stage 2 will go swimming every Wednesday for one term of the year.  There are two pools at St James? Swimming Pool; one for children who are at the early stages of learning to swim and a larger one for more experienced swimmers.  This term Miss Dyke?s class (year 6) plus half of Mrs Smith?s class (Year 3) will go.
