Year 2

 

In Year 2 this term we will be covering the following:-

 

Literacy:

Children will be:

  • learning about the structure of information books including non-chronological reports
  • reading and writing extended stories
  • examining stories by significant children's authors and different stories by the same author
  • reading and learning about humorous verse

 

Numeracy:

Children will be:

  • learning about number sequences, place value, reasoning about numbers and ordering and estimating
  • developing their understanding of addition and subtraction including mental calculations
  • learning about shape and space and describing position, direction and movement
  • developing multiplication and division strategies and learning number facts including simple fractions
  • sorting information into tables and graphs

 

Years 1 and 2

 

The following subjects are organised into a two year cycle to ensure that children do not cover the same topic twice.  The work is planned so that children are taught at their appropriate level.

 

Science:

Children will be learning:

  • about plants and animals in their local environment and that like humans, plants and animals reproduce
  • to observe and compare similarities and differences between the living things in their environment

 

ICT:

Year 1 will be using the computer to:

  • using computer software to make pictograms and graphs
  • read and produce a set of instructions for others to follow

 

Year 2 will be using the computer to:

·         programme routes for an on screen turtle and a beebot

·         make graphs and tables to answer questions using Infant Video Toolkit

 

 


 

Geography:

Going to the seaside.  This topic will involve children in using a variety of resources to find out information about the seaside and its environment.

 

History:

Seaside holidays in the past.  We will look at similarities and differences between holidays now and in the past.

 

RE:

Special Places:

  • the children will be discussing places that are special to them.  They will visit St Mary?s Church and learn about some of the characteristics and functions of religious buildings and places.

Special Books:

  • the children will be identifying and discussing books and stories which are special to them.  They will also be introduced to books from key religions.

 

Art:

Mother Nature - designer:

  • in this topic children will explore line, shape, colour and texture in natural forms.  They will make observations of natural objects and use their observations as a basis for textile design.

 

Design and Technology:

Vehicles:

  • to look at simple mechanisms and understand the features of different wheeled vehicles.  Children will design and make their own vehicle.

 

Music:

Year 2:

Rain, rain go away

·         exploring timbre, tempo and dynamics

Sounds interesting

·         exploring sounds

 

PE:

Athletics and Games:

  • to be led by specialist teachers throughout the term and skills consolidated between visits

Year 2 Swimming:

  • To develop confidence and ability in the swimming pool.
