Year 1
In Year 1 this term we will be covering the following:
Year 1
Literacy
The children will be learning to recognise instructions, labels, captions and signs, reading stories which have familiar settings and learning rhymes with predictable and repetitive patterns. They will continue to develop their knowledge of letter sounds and use of them for their spelling and writing. There will be regular handwriting practice.
Numeracy
The children will learn about the following:
· Counting and properties of number, place, value and ordering, working with numbers from 0 - 20
· Addition and subtraction - finding different ways of comparing numbers, looking for simple patterns, counting on and back and recording addition and subtraction problems
· Money and real life problems. Recognising coins, using them to find the total cost of items and make decisions involving money
· Measures including problems and using standard and non-standard measures to compare lengths
· Shape and space - name and describe 2D shapes using the appropriate vocabulary and making models and patterns
· Understanding time - knowing the days of the week in order and the seasons and developing an understanding of the duration of time
· Handling data, collecting data and recording using objects and pictures and interpreting simple tables
Years 1 and 2
The following subjects are organised into a two-year cycle to ensure that children do not cover the same topic twice. The work is planned so that children are taught at their appropriate level.
History
Learning about lives of different famous people
- They will learn about the life of Florence Nightingale
- They will learn how hospitals have changed and explore 'past and present'
Geography
Where In The World Is Barnaby Bear-
- They will learn to locate places on maps
- They will develop their use of geographical language
Science
Year 1 only
The topics this term are:
- Ourselves - the children will learn about senses and how they can use them. They will also learn about humans and animals and how they move and grow.
- Light and dark - the children will learn about the different sources of light and use their sense to explore and experiment with light
Music
Sounds interesting:
- To focus listening and to recognise a variety of sounds
The long and the short of it:
- To use voice and instruments to make long and short sounds
- They will also learn a variety of new songs
Feel the pulse:
- To enable children to hear and play the beat in music
Design and Technology
Moving Pictures
- They will explore how levers and slider mechanisms work
- They will design and make moving pictures
Art
The topic is Self Portrait
- The children will be exploring ideas using drawing and painting materials
- They will learn to observe and make comments about their work and the work of others
PE
Games
- Children will participate in multi-skills activities
Dance
- Children will learn different types of dances eg country dance and modern dance
- They will learn routines as well as creating their own
RE
Ourselves
- Children will have opportunities to talk about their own feelings and experience
- They will listen to and recall elements of stories which include some religious beliefs
Christmas
- They will learn about the Christmas story and will participate in a nativity play
- They will learn about Christmas as a celebration
ICT
Year 1 & 2
Using a word bank
- Children will learn how to use words from a word bank to create sentences
- They will develop a greater awareness of the keyboard through word processing
Year 1
An introduction to modelling
- Children will learn that the computer can be used to represent real and fantasy situations
Key Stage 1 Homework
Mondays - Spellings (tests on Friday)
Thursday - Numeracy or Literacy work to be handed in on Monday
