Curriculum Coverage - Autumn 2009

 

 

 

The Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1

 

 

This term the following things will be covered in the curriculum.

 

 

Reception

 

 

Children in the Reception Year will be following the Foundation Stage Curriculum.  There are sets of

 

Early Learning goals for this stage which set out what most children are expected to achieve by the end of the Reception Year.  These early learning goals are taught in six areas:

 

 

  • Personal, social and emotional development

     

  • Communication, language and literacy

     

  • Mathematical development

     

  • Knowledge and understanding of the world

     

  • Physical development

     

  • Creative development

Numeracy

 

Children will be:

 

·         Learning to count, read, write, compare and order numbers

 

·         Using vocabulary to describe shapes, patterns and position

 

·         Using mathematical ideas to solve problems

 

·         Using measures to find out length, mass and capacity

 

 

Literacy

 

Children will be:

 

  • Experiencing a wide variety of stories, non-fiction texts and rhymes, including stories to retell

     

  • Learning to identify sounds in order to read them in different contexts

     

  • Develop their handwriting

     

 

Requests

 

  • Any Chinese artefacts including pictures, objects, chopsticks, dressing up clothes etc

     

  • Any small farm set toys including animals

     

  • Any old metal pots and pans, cutlery and old plastic bowls for a sound garden

     

  • Any children’s comics in good condition

     

 

 

Year 1

 

 

Literacy

 

Children will be learning to recognise instructions, labels, captions and signs, reading stories which have familiar settings and learning rhymes with predictable and repetitive patterns.  They will continue to develop their knowledge of letter sounds and use them for their spelling and writing.  There will be regular handwriting practice.

 

 

Numeracy

 

The children will learn about the following:

 

  • Counting and properties of number, place value and ordering, working with numbers from 0 – 20

     

  • Addition and subtraction – finding different ways of comparing numbers, looking for simple patterns, counting on and back and recording addition and subtraction problems

     

  • Money and real life problems.  Recognising coins, using them to find the total cost of items and make decisions involving money.

     

  • Measures including problems and using standard and non standard measures to compare lengths.

     

  • Shape and space – name and describe 2D shapes using the appropriate vocabulary and making models and patterns.

     

  • Understanding time and knowing the days of the week in order and the seasons and developing an understanding of the duration of time.

     

  • Handling data and recording using objects and pictures and interpreting simple tables.

     

 

 

Year 2

 

 

Literacy

 

The children will be learning how to read and write non-fiction text and encountering a variety of stories and poems with familiar settings.  They will develop their sound and spelling knowledge and there will be regular handwriting practice where children will learn how to join their letters.

 

 

Numeracy

 

The children will learn to:

 

  • Count in steps of different sizes, describe and continue number sequences and make predictions.  Recognise odd and even numbers, devise sequences and explain their reasoning.

     

  • Read and write numbers to 100, know what a digit represents and compare and order numbers

     

  • Use different strategies to add and subtract two digit numbers and multiples of 10 and recognise and use patterns in calculations

     

  • Solve money word problems, recognise and use different value coins.  Find money totals and give change

     

  • Solve problems involving standard and non-standard measures

     

  • Recognise and describe movement, solve problems and recognise symmetry and patterns

     

  • Understand multiplication as repeated addition.  Count in twos, fives and tens.  Recognise patterns in the two, five and ten times tables.  Develop an understanding of division by grouping

     

  • Collect, organise and record data in tables and graphs

     

 

Years 1 and 2

 

 

The following subjects are organised into a two-year cycle to ensure that children do not cover the same topic twice.  The work is planned so that children are taught at their appropriate level.

 

 

History

 

The children will be learning about lives of famous people such as Florence Nightingale, Louis Braille, and the Queen.

 

 

Science

 

The topic this term is health and growth.  Children will be learning about food groups, the benefits of exercise and the need for good hygiene.

 

 

Music

 

Feel the pulse:

 

  • To enable children to hear and play the beat in music

     

 

The children will also be learning songs for the Nativity play

 

 

Design and Technology

 

Moving Pictures

 

  • They will explore how levers and slider mechanisms work

     

  • They will design and make moving pictures

     

 

Art

 

The topic this term is:

 

Print and pattern

 

  • Exploring different prints to make an animal mask

     

  • Self Portrait

     

  • The children will be exploring ideas using drawing and painting materials

     

  • They will learn to observe and make comments about their work and the work of others

     

P.E

 

  • Outdoor education – learning to work as a team to achieve challenges

     

  • Gymnastics – floor and balance work

     

 

R.E.

 

Ourselves

 

  • Children will have opportunities to talk about their own feelings and experience

     

  • They will listen to and recall elements of stories which include some religious beliefs

     

Christmas

 

  • They will learn about the Christmas story and will participate in a nativity play

     

  • They will learn about Christmas as a celebration

     

 

ICT

 

  • Exploring different programs such  as textease and paint

     

  • Using the Internet to practice and consolidate their maths skills

     

 

Foundation Stage Homework

 

 

The children will have books to share at home and also words to learn to read.  Written homework is given once a week after the October half term.

  • Children will learn about how Jesus lived and the lessons he taught

     

History

 

The Vikings

 

  • Children will learn how settlements develop over time and how early settlers provided many of the settlements we use today (links to Vikings)

     

  • Children will learn why people invade and settle in other countries

     

  • Demonstrate factual knowledge of some of the reasons for Viking raids

     

  • Understand that some historical accounts were Anglo-Saxon interpretations

     

 

ICT

 

Year 3

 

E-mail

 

  • Children will be learning how to send e-mails

     

Modelling effects on screen

 

  • Children will learn to enter instructions onto a screen turtle and compare this with the operation of a floor turtle

     

Year 4

 

Writing for different audiences

 

  • Using and manipulating text in word

     

 

Music

 

Year 3 and Year 4

 

 

All year 3 pupils will begin to learn how to play the Ukulele and Year 4 will be developing the skills they learned last year.

 

 

Design and Technology

 

 Viking Storybooks

 

  • Children will investigate the lever and linkage systems of pop up books. They will make a Viking story book which has pop up parts.

     

Science

 

Keeping Warm

 

The children will:

 

  • Use thermometers, learn to read them and use the appropriate vocabulary when measuring temperature.

     

  • Identify some everyday uses of thermal insulators

     

  • Recognise that objects cool or warm to the temperature of their surroundings

     

PE

 

Invasion games

 

  • Children will learn how to outwit their opponents and score when playing team games

     

  • They will develop skills including throwing, catching, kicking and striking skills

     

  • They will learn basic rules

     

Dance activities

 

  • Children will learn to create and perform dances in groups and pairs

     

  • They will learn how to explore and communicate ideas through movement

     

Swimming

 

  • Half of Mrs Smith’s class will go swimming this term

Year 6

 

Changing circuits

 

·         Children will explore understanding of circuits, constructing them using symbols and investigating ideas to answer questions

 

Forces in action.

 

·         Children will learn about a variety of forces and how changes in motion  occur when forces act

 

 

History

 

What can we learn from recent history from studying the life of a famous person?

 

·         Children will study and reflect on the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

 

 

RE

 

Barriers and bridges

 

·         Children will explore how religious belief effect approaches to moral issues

 

 

Geography

 

A contrasting locality: Bristol

 

·         Children will study locality in the UK that contrasts with their own area

 

 

Art

 

Visiting a museum

 

·         Children will visit and learn about SS Great Britain Museum – work back at school will be based on information and experience acquired

 

 

 

Design and Technology

 

Bridges

 

·         Children will investigate several bridges and investigate reinforcing and strengthening techniques.  They will design and make a bridge for a specific purpose.

Year 5

 

Finding things out

 

·         Children will make complex searches and refine them

 

·         Children will work independently to find real life, real time and everyday information on the Internet to support cross curricular wok

 

Year 6

 

Multimedia Presentation

 

·         Children will learn how to create a multi-media presentation using text, images and sounds.  They will learn how to design a set of multimedia pages and create the links between them.

 

 

Music

 

Ukulele

 

·         Learning and consolidating chords

 

·         Performing to a range of audiences

 

·         Playing untuned and tuned percussion

 

PE

 

Invasions Games (years 5 and 6)

 

·         Children will develop skills of passing, dribbling, and shooting, awareness of space, and tactics of attacking and defending in a variety of exercises and games

 

Gymnastics (year 5)

 

·         Children will develop complex sequences choosing actions, body shapes and balances from a wider range of themes and ideas

 

Swimming (year 6)

 

·         All children in Key Stage 2 will go swimming every Wednesday for one term of the year.  There are two pools at St James’ Swimming Pool; one for children who are at the early stages of learning to swim and a larger one for more experienced swimmers.  This term Mr Griffiths’ class (year 6) plus half of Mrs Smith’s class (Year 3) will go.
