About Our School

Welcome to Bishops Lydeard Church of England Primary School. Please take time to explore our web site which contains lots of information about the School.
The School first opened its doors to children on 1st April 1872. The original building had sandstone walls and consisted of one long, high classroom for the older children and a smaller room for the younger children.
Our school has been modernised over the years and we now have seven classrooms and a variety of resource areas including a computer suite and food technology area.

There are seven classes with each class serving one age range. Although the number of pupils in each class can vary, the average is currently 29. In addition to the classteachers there are also teaching assistants for every class and a Special Needs Teacher and assistant. Every teacher has special responsibilty for at least one curriculum area and a 3-strong Management Team (Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher and Assessment Manager) provide the leadership. The Management is supported by the Secretary and the Finance Officer.

The School enjoys the support of a keen and committed Governing Body of 14 members, drawn from parents, staff, church and community groups. There is also an enthusiastic School Association which works with energy to organise social fund raising events to support the pupils and the School in general.

Bishops Lydeard Church of England Primary School is situated about seven miles north of the county town of Taunton and at the foot of the Quantock Hills - an area of outstanding natural beauty. The village can be described as self-contained having a number of shops, garages, public houses and also St Mary's Church with which the school is closely connected and whose Rector is a governor. There are no other schools in the village and at secondary transfer age the children normally attend Kingsmead Community School at Wiveliscombe some ten miles distant.

Every year we elicit the views of our parents in order to take in account their suggestions and concerns. You will find the results of our 2008 Questionnaire in the Documents section of this website.
